From Theron Kuntz: I did a little search at www.strategypage.com and thought of it as kind of exemplary. There's much info for the Wargamer here, although its field is dedicated to the boardgame genre of Wargames. But many a versatile Wargamer may recognize something here, including Hasbro's new Axis and Allies Europe game with stylized pieces for the major contenders. Matthew Caffrey has a very long article on the "History of Wargames," and I should guess that interested readers should read this so that comments and viewpoints may be generated about it in the future. It's 93-pages long, and opens with some insightful information and comments, then starts with "In The Beginning," which suggests the protoform of Wargames found by the ditch diggers (ethnography) in early cultures, then the development continues by years, starting with 1664-1800, and so forth. It's a dandy of an article, and well written by Mr. Caffrey who is employed by the US Armed Forces. The Strategy Page is a useful site, particularly if there's a penchant for studying modern-day history and idiosyncrasy (such as Desert Storm), much like Tom Clancy's work which uses General Franks' VII Corps as a focal point of his elucidation. From Gerald Swick: A local paper announced publication of a science fiction novel set against the 100 Years War. I have no idea how good it is or is not, but I know several of our members enjoy both history and SF, so I thought I'd pass along the information. Gerald "Science fiction readers in the area may be interested in trying a new book by author Eric Flint. Flint visited the North Marion area last year to research his book, "1632," which as just been published. The plot involves the northern West Virginia town of Grantville, for which Mannington, WVa served as the model. One day, the entire town and surrounding area, including the high school (based on North Marion High School) are transported through time to the year 1632 and are dropped in the German countryside in the middle of the Hundred Years' War. The 21st cientury characters are forced to survive and adapt to the world of the 17th century.
