As an infantry officer, he has served in a variety of assignments in Germany, Korea, and the United States. From 1979 to 1982, he was an instructor and assistant professor in the Department of History at West Point, where he taught an elective course titled "Barbarossa to Berlin: The Russo-German War, 1941-1945." He will assume command of an infantry battalion at Fort Ord in the summer of 1987.
