Let Slip the Dogs of War

Editorial

by David W. Tschanz

Cry "Havoc!" enters its second year on a bittersweet note. Shortly after our last issue went to press, I received word that one of CH's early contributors and my good friend, John Doll, passed away after a long battle with Hodgkins disease. John was unique and his driving ambition was to be a published writer. He certainly had the talent, though not always the time. He raised letter writing to an art form and few people could write them as well and as consistently as he could. A good example was "Men at Arms" which appeared in CH #2. The entire article was a letter he wrote me on the subject. Cyndy and I will be poorer because of his absence. And our deepest sympathies go to his wife Shirley and their daughter Karol.

Since the usual group of contributors took us seriously about having happy holidays I found the space to finally squeeze in the oft-promised "War Against Smallpox." Jim Bloom provides an interesting insight into the nature of Josephus in his review essay, while Earl Toops gives us another of his excellent book reviews, this one on an account about the Spanish Civil War. In this issue, Saudi Arabia's Al Jouf is featured as well, a fascinating place not open to many outsiders. The Wargaming Widow provides some distractions for the family while you "play" with your toys. The word scramble is not as easy as it looks!
