CH42 has arrived!

We're getting there.

In a few more days, CH43 will come out and I can start planning excuses for why CH44 is late.

Walter Reed tends to a yellow fever patient.

This issue might best be known as the return of the insects . The lead article (by me) is on the impact of yellow fever on Winfield Scott's planning of the Mexican-American War. A few pages later Robert Peterson examines the role of yellow fever in keeping alive the slave revolt in Haiti, and the eventual disappearance of the French from the Western Hemisphere.

Casting the net wider, we look at the beginning of scientific cryptography by Al-Kindi, while Dan Poore looks at an "oldie but goodie" on the politics of the Gulf War.

Rounding out this quarter's issue is some more mundane, but none the less interesting pieces -- "Sports and War" and a tribute to Cher Ami -- the feathered hero of World War I. Looking ahead to next month -- a photo essay on the World Trade Center, another look at Douhet and some very special surprises
