When I sat down to compile this issue of Cry "Havoc!" I had every intention of including a four-six page article on the "War Against Smallpox." When I was about midway through the layout and composition I realized that I was not going to have space for it, or a number of other items that were sitting around waiting for inclusion. The fact not only surprised me, but was extremely gratifying. I started Cry "Havoc!" because I felt and believed that there was a need for a newsletter that dealt with topics not covered in the mainstream of wargaming -- travel tips, book reviews, computer games, and stuff for our long-suffering wives. One reviewer stated that Cry "Havoc!" was ideal for someone who believed that their hobby did not stop at the map edge. That was what I was aiming for and I was glad to see the goal was obvious. Cry "Havoc!" has had its ups and downs. In fact it almost never got off the ground as the initial response was, to say the least, underwhelming. The subscription base is still small but its the involvement of our readership that keeps the issues coming and full of THEIR material. There's nothing more satisfying to me than to NOT have room for articles I wrote. At least if I'm killed by a homesick Sudanese driver, Cyndy will be able to put out one more issue. With the holiday season coming up its time to be thankful and time to be give back to others. I'd like to spend a few moments doing both. First off I'd like to thank the Wargaming Widow herself -- who despite hating to write tackles the task every quarter with aplomb and spunk. She's also the person who has to sit there and copy edit the issue -- a thankless job I'm more than happy to dump on her. Thanks and gratitude are also owed to Jim Werbaneth -- who talked me out of canceling Cry "Havoc!" at the beginning and has always been ready with the encouraging word and timely piece. Earl Toops should be mentioned in the same breath and with the same sense of appreciation as the other two. Earl lives across the causeway in Bahrain and has been nothing less than an enthusiastic supporter, contributor and booster. The sort of person every editor loves to have around. He also showed me how a book review should be written. The strange part about this trio is that while one of them sleeps with me, and can be expected to have some reason to be this supportive, I've never met the other two. Thanks and appreciation are also owed to Jonathan Rice who started us off with two excellent articles on gaming and Brian Train who was there at the outset as well (and who also got married this year). Cry "Havoc!"'s graphics editor, Bob Miller, teases me mercilessly about the way he got his subscription but is always on the look out for high quality graphics to use and quite willing to make them himself when all else fails. I'd also like to thank Gus Carroll, Pete Warnock, Mike Flynn, Rami Kamal, John Doll, Bill Kaliher and Bill Jeter for the various things they have brought to the Cry "Havoc!" throughout the year. I expect to hear more from them this year -- all of them are talented individuals with unique insights. The last thanks is reserved to you -- the subscribers to this experiment -- without your input we couldn't keep going! Have a great holiday season! See you in 1994!
