Let Slip the Dogs of War

Editorial

by David Tschanz

CH37 has finally arrived -- late -- but it has arrived. I'm not going to bore you with the details or apologies of why (see Bits n Pieces for some of the reasons). I will tell you that CH38 scheduled for release on May 1, will be delayed by 2 weeks -- but that's because on March 28th I leave on vacation until May 1.

Now to this issue. The anthrax scare of last fall, discussions of biological warfare and supposedly labs found in Tora Bora and Gardez, brought me back to my initial military history roots -- namely the role of disease in military affairs. "Phantom Warriors" reminds us that not all disease threats are necessarily manmade and point s to the problems of sub-Saharan Africa as a threat to US National Security. Jimmy McWilliams, an 81 year old young Mensan briefly recounts his service with the 9th Air Force in the ETO during World War II. Ken West discusses the weaponry of the Indian Wars and "Old West" as well as his experiences as a retiree archaeologist in Colorado on his first dig A pair of book reviews, one by Brian Toelle on the 8th Air Force and the other by the long absent TW Gideon round out the issue.

Until next time, take care..
