No need to look shocked. CH 34 is earlier than CH33 was late for the simple reason that I will be on vacation for most of April and the early part of May. So, we're early. This issue is special. MSGT Jari Villanueva, USAF has been conducting research into military music, particularly Taps for all of his professional career. He has given us his kind permission to reprint his article on the roots of that most haunting of all military tatoos. subsequent surgery. D. Clark Ulam, Jr, a first time contributor offers us our cover story, on the role of castles in William's conquest of England. Judy Vasiliauskas kindly provided us a copy of a letter her Uncle Irvin Askine sent from the Italian theater during World War II. Janet Phillips penned a well written review on Return to Bull Run. At the rate she's submitting material she may land up as a contributing editor. Rami Kamal provides some unique facts on World War II. I have also opted to print Ty Bomba's letter on the Consim-L board regarding the financial problems at Command. While I recognize that a number of persons were not fond of Ty, for anyone of a variety of reasons, there is little doubt that Command was, and still is, an excellent magazine -- and one that deserves a better fate than it seems to be headed for. In the meantime, CH keeps chugging along and the Military History SIG remains small, but dedicated.
