Let Slip the Dogs of War

Editorial

by David W. Tschanz

This issue is late and deliberately so. With the 10th anniversary of the Gulf War coinciding with this issue our editors decided to wait to determine what we wanted to say about the event that most of us on the staff were here for.

What we decided was to talk about the role of the media in warfare. In searching for the proper material we came across the article by LTC Frank Stech that dominates this issue. Stech's article -- originally published in the Army War College's journal Parameters provides an insightful and comprehensive analysis into the presence of the media and hgow to deal with it.

Stech's insights are profound and right on the mark, explaining why the original version of this article was co-winner of the 1994 CJCS Strategy Essay competition.

In addition to the Stech article, we begin our ninth year of publication with one of Jim Werbaneth's patented travel pieces, this time into Tennessee to visit the field's at Chickamauga and Chatanooga and climb to the top of Lookout Mountain.

New contributors Alan Cranford and Phil Leonard offer looks at two different wars, with Alan showing that there was a silver lining to the black cloud of the disaster at Pearl Harbor, while Phil comments on Massachusetts' favorite daughter of the Revolution. See you in May!
