Strategy World, a company that has been running the Hundred Years War game since 1991, is setting up a new site called Strategy Page (www.strategypage.com). devoted to military history and wargaming. We see this as a combination webzine (as in Slate and Salon) and game site. Sort of an S&T 2.0. It's available now, but in beta for another month or so until we get most of the categories filled with content. This is an online magazine for those interested in military affairs and military history. But with a difference. We do it from the viewpoint of wargamers. This means:
Remember, we are interested in putting up just about anything of potential interest, including academic papers. We are installing a user polling and feedback system, so we will find out what is hot and what is not. While myself, Al Nofi, Dan Masterson, Austin Bay and a bunch of other wargamers are the initial contributors, we need more contributors to write about military history, current affairs and wargaming. Wargamers and military historians are preferred, especially those who have played the manual type games for a while. Playing the manual wargames gives one a unique insight into military affairs, the same kind of unique insight we are trying to have on the Strategy Page. Staff positions we are looking to fill are, FYEO Links Editor- Finds links for FYEO items, Game Links Editor- Finds game related links, File Librarian- Gets suitable items into the Strategy Page library. Quick & Dirty Guide to Wars contributors How to Make War contributors. Mushware Editor Video Reviews Editor Print Reviews Editor Games Reviews Editor BBS and Chat sysops Editorial Features Copy Editor Payment and RightsGood news and bad news here. This is not one of those heavily funded .com operations aiming for a future IPO. Most of Strategy Page is thus free, although we will try and develop items people will be willing to pay extra for. We will pay for contributions, but not much. A few hundred dollars for articles, about the same monthly for key staffers and down to twenty bucks for smaller items. But there are other benefits. If youget a fee for an article, you can use Schedule C when doing your taxes. In other words, things like books, magazines, and even games, you buy to prepare your contributions become tax deductible. Another unique advantage of web publication is that we are only buying electronic rights for use on Strategy Page. Thus you can sell your material for publication in print, or other electronic publications. Publication in Strategy Page can also help you develop a book idea, and provide something to show an editor or agent to increase interest. And then there's always the public service angle. There certainly is a need for more accurate information on military affairs, and Strategy Page is where we would like to help solve that problem. As we make more money at this, we'll pay more. Features the Strategy Page will have include, News Links- Links to major online news outlets that provide good military information. With comments on usefulness of each link. Including comments on quality of news at each site. FYEO (For Your Eyes Only), has data on current and potential wars is covered using my book Opinions- Jim Dunnigan, Austin Bay (and others) provide daily, weekly, monthly and, more timely (as needed) columns on subjects that fit Strategy World's mandate. Combat Information Center- Al Nofi's column with historical information of interest to Strategy World customers. Al also has much other stuff that he will put up on Strategy Page as quickly as he can. Articles- We can experiment here. Some of the traditional S&T style analytic history articles (using hypertext), small pieces on timely subjects, and articles that basically tie together a bunch of related links. These articles require a fair bit of effort to create. We won't have to do too many, perhaps on a monthly or bi-monthly cycle for major articles, and more frequent for smaller articles. We will also be able to build an archive of these, as they will have lasting value. Media Reviews- Historical movies and TV features reviewed for their historical accuracy. Designer's Request- People working on projects can ask for guidance. Library- Collection of electronic documents (or links where we cannot getthe docs themselves) of interest to out customers. Strategy Links- Links to game and information links of interest to our customers. Subject Matter Sites- Non-news informational sites containing material of interest to our customers. Newsgroups- Newsgroups of interest to our customers. Listservs- Listservs of interest to our customers. Game Discussion- Chat and BBS areas for discussion of issues of interest toour customers. Games- HYW and any additional games we can develop and deploy. With HYW 2.0 we will have an engine that is much more easily developed into new games. I can build a game engine (using HYW as a basis) for gaming various international crises. Customers can play out the possibilities, along with a discussion area on each game, and another discussion area for the games in general.
