Contributing editor Brian Train was involved in an automobile accident on December 9th that resulted in the crushing of his tibia and fibula (the bones of the lower leg) and is likely to result in a long and painful convalescence. Brian's work has graced the pages of CH since its inception and he is a friend to many of us. Please help keep his spirits up and e-mail him your best wishes at citizenx@islandnet.com If you want to send a card you can write him c/o Cry "Havoc!" and we'll make sure he gets the message. Brian may be injured but it looks like he's really making a mark for himself: "Reviews of my published games are coming out in Paper Wars -- Shining Path and later Land of the Free. Two glowing reviews of Arriba Espana have appeared in Web-Grognards. Freikorps should be out soon and Battle for China by mid-1999. I have not written any major articles in a year or more - too busy with house stuff and growing kids, all that. I'm now a Contributing Editor of Simulacrum, too!"

The Military History SIG welcomes new members Ric Pavlas of Dhahran, Dave Stevens of California and Dale Tomlinson of Tennessee. Sometime Editorial Assistant and avid computer wargaming buff Karl Tschanz' recommended game for this winter is Fallout 2.

According to the quarterly report received from MagWeb, Jim Dunnigan's article on the impact of the Mongols on the Eurasian population and Jim Werbaneth's tribute to Avalon Hill (CH24) were the two top read articles on the CH portion of the site. The articles on the Bonus Army and the South African Defence Force by Brian Train as well as Mike Flynn's first installment in the Benedict Arnold saga were also in the top ten.

New member Dale Tomlinson added a bit of SIG history that was unknown to me and undoubtedly others: "When I dropped out of Mensa in 1988 it was primarily because the military history and wargame SIG had folded. It is a little ironic that then, as now, the SIG was headed by someone out of the country and someone connected with oil." Julie Olson, managing editor of The Mensa Bulletin has advised that a short piece on the Military History SIG will be appearing in the March 1999 issue.

Ken West (maghreb@pcisys.net) is nearing completion on a CD-ROM version of Ulysses S. Grant's Memoirs (both volumes). Ken is offering this complete copy of the military classic, with better maps than in the original, to CH subscribers and SIG members for the cost of the CD and shipping (about $5, maybe less?). Please contact Ken if you're interested in obtaining a high quality computer copy of this military classic.

The erstwhile War Gaming Widow, Cyndy Tschanz, wanted everyone to know that Saddam Hussein was closer to feeling the truth wrath of the United States' most devasating weapon in December. "They started Desert Fox just in time for Christmas break of the kids coming back from boarding school in the US," she said. "If those flights had been cancelled and we mothers weren't able to see sons and daughter we hadn't seen since September. There is a good chance we very likely would have marched on Baghdad and settled this once and for all."
