Cry "Havoc!" Teams Up With MagWeb

by David W. Tschanz

Being somewhat technically minded and computer literate (at least that's what my Microsoft Certification says I am) ye Editor and Publisher started issuing Cry "Havoc!" in electronic format last issue. In the interim I have taken additional steps to broaden the distribution of Cry "Havoc!" and advertise the Military History SIG of American Mensa, Ltd. to as wide an audience as possible. And, as an aside, to drive down the price of membership to as low as possible while still maintaining our standards for quality and excellence.

As part of that process Cry "Havoc!" recently entered into an agreement with MagWeb, the only subscription based military history website. Rather than get into an involved description of what MagWeb is all about (it will be the subject of a review and assessment in Cry "Havoc!" #25) allow me to state that this is where I believe the future of desktop published newsletters is headed. I also strongly encourage you to "check it out" with a brief visit to www.magweb.com — I think you'll be pleased what you see. And if this has whetted your appetite at all — then the following should have you firing up your web browser.

MagWeb Reaches 50-Magazine Milestone With Out-of-Print Title

Stockton, NJ (August, 1998) – Russ Lockwood, CEO of MagWeb, the only subscription-based military history web site (www.magweb.com) has announced that subscribers now have access to 50 magazines and over 7,500 articles. The 50th magazine added to MagWeb's archives is Conflict, a prestigious military history magazine that ceased publication in 1974. Out-of-print magazines that collectors treasure, such as Conflict, Campaign, and others, and a dozen European publications, such as First Empire, Battlefields, and MicroMark Army Lists are among the 50 magazines on MagWeb. Paying an annual print subscription to all 50 magazines would total over $1,000, making MagWeb's annual $59.95 membership fee an online bargain.

"In just two years of operation, MagWeb has really carved out a niche," says Russ Lockwood, CEO of MagWeb. "As a web-based subscription model, we are able to deliver a treasure trove of military history and product information, 24 hours per day, from sources around the world," adds Lockwood. MagWeb's reach is global, with members in 32 different countries. "Although most members are in the United States," Lockwood notes, "we have members from places as far flung as Abu Dhabi and Zimbabwe."

Unlike other publication libraries such as Dow Jones and Lexis-Nexis (which charge a fee plus a per-article surcharge), MagWeb's all-inclusive pricing allows members to read, print out, and download full text articles, maps, photos, uniform plates, and other graphics for one low price. In addition, MagWeb provides battlefield tours, sample book chapters, product reviews, and other "bonus" articles at no extra charge. MagWeb contains only the articles, not the advertising, from each magazine.

"MagWeb can be compared to a premium cable channel," explains Lockwood. "Although there are some quality shows on free TV, the best programs are often found on cable. Similarly, people are willing to pay a small price for full access to hard-to-find magazines, saving them from wasting time wandering the Web. Our premium site helps you research faster, the product reviews help you buy smarter, and the electronic format makes it easier to use what you find."

With 20 new issues uploaded each month, the site remains fresh and valuable to anyone with an interest in military history. A newly revised interface design provides increased ease of navigation. MagWeb was founded in July, 1996 to provide easy access to a coalition of military history magazines. From magazines like American Revolution Journal and Clash of Empires to Napoleon and The Heliograph, MagWeb is the only web site of its kind to offer unlimited access to an ever-expanding archive of more than 7,500 articles for under $5 per month. Sample articles can be viewed at no charge at http://www.magweb.com.
