Let Slip the Dogs of War

Editorial

by David W. Tschanz

This issue marks the completion of six years of publication for Cry "Havoc!" Given the generally "fly by the seat of our pants" nature of CH and our amateur status I'm amazed that it's lasted this long — but then again I keep forgetting that we have a readership that is not only cultrured and urbane, but intelligent as well. Not to mention a band of very loyal contributors. In fact this represents one of my favorite type of issues I have contributed nothing to it beyond the occasional tidbit. Why is that a big deal?

Well, too many of newsletters become one man shows and I'm not the prolific a writer. Besides I don't know everything and I'm quite content these days to hear what other members have to say.

Having said all that I'd like to take a few minutes to thank some key people. Bob Miller, Jim Werbaneth, Brian Train and Mike Flynn are probably the people I have to thank the most for keeping Cry "Havoc!" operating this year. Without their contributions you probably wouldn't be reading this as they, along with the "occasional" contributors like Jim Dunnigan, Brian Toelle and others make picking up CH a worthwhile endeavor on your part.

CH has also embarked on a new venture. An internet presence in collaboration with MagWeb. This was a carefully considered decision. The move may cost us subscibers, but then again it may enhance our presence in the world of military history and wargaming. Either way we will continue in our primary goals — to deal with military history issues that don't always make the mainstream, promote the SIG, and provide budding writers with an opportunity to publish and be recognized. I admit to a sense of pride whenever I can announce the publication of one of our band elsewehere.

If CH has opened your eyes and given you the chance to explore your own skills, then I consider the goal of this newsletter to be successful. I owe you all, readers and contributors alike, a great deal of thanks for making that possible. Have a great holiday season and I'll see you all in February!
