Let Slip the Dogs of War

Editorial

by David W. Tschanz

Since the first issue of Cry "Havoc!" I've been asked two questions repeatedly. The first is what sort of a name is "Tschanz." The second is what exactly does "Cry "Havoc!" mean anyway.

The answer to the first part is simple. Its Swiss. On a trip to Zurich a few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing that name take up an entire page in the phone book. Now if only I knew if any of them were relatives.

The answer to the second question is as simple. Cry "Havoc!" intends to examine the topics we cover critically. Our reviews, for example, are geared to determining if they are of any value to the military history buff and/or wargaming enthusiast. The title expresses our editorial attitude, policy or whatever. "Havoc" does not mean chaos --as Shakespeare well knew. "Havok" was an old military command to offer no quarter, and we don't intend to.

People are entitled to express their opinions and full license is offered to that. This issue starts our travel series with a look at Antietam. Jonathan Rice continues his series on how to improve wargames. Wargaming Widow's Survival Guide offers something to add some zest to the next wargame session. As always we look forward to your comments and contributions. They are, after all, what we're all about.
