Let Slip the Dogs of War

Editorial

by David W. Tschanz

We're back. For those of you who kep track of the wanderings of the Tschanz family we just finished a trip around the world stopping in Singapore, New Zealand, Phoenix, New York, Florida and London before making our way back to Dhahran. I strongly recommend New Zealand by the way.

So what does that have to do with Cry "Havoc?" Nothing actually — but this time I came close to actually meeting Geoff Riddell and Jim Werbaneth for the first time. At least I was in the same cities they were for awhile. Which is somewhat interesting when you think of it. The bulk of this issue was written by three persons I have enormous respect for — Brian Train, Jim Bloom and Jim Werbaneth and despite the fact that I know a great deal about all three (and they me) and have come to rely on them -- our paths have never crossed.

Bloom's essay, this issue's cover story, looks at the "What If..." genre of literature. Far from being a sophmoric parlor game, he reminds us, it is serious attempt at understanding where we are, where we're going and where we might have been. Brian Train presents an explanation of the Chinese Cultural Revolution that is nothing short of masterful — one of the more lucid explanations of a phenomenon I'll admit I've never fully appreciated.

Summer's coming and Jim Werbaneth's travel piece on the Niagara frontier, graced by his splendid photos, offers readers an alternative destination to Disney World and other less interesting places.

Finally, unless there is a major objection I'd like to print the e-mail addresses of contributors and members in the next issue. If you'd like me to do so, please send me an e-mail message at the addresses to the left.
