A bullet in the head, clenched teeth on a capsule of cyanide, two mushroon clouds ... after more years of bloodshed than most people ever want to remember the Second World War came to an end as it had started -- in violence, treachery and death. From that field steeped in blood there was, and still is hope, that this will never happen again. For the last fifty years the world has managed to avoiding plunging into the abyss. It might have been dumb luck, or it might have been the beginning of wisdom. Only the future can tell. This issue is devoted mostly to the end of that war. Bob Miller's beautifully crafted cover highlights the Armageddon-like instrument that forced an end to the war and that waits in the wings. The opening commentary serves to remind those who have forgotten just how monstrous an evil the world suddenly found itself confronted with. Mike Flynn's exploration of the Huertgen Forest debacle is a cautionary tale. Complacency costs lives. As always we look forward to your input and hope for your offerings, from full length articles to reviews and trivia. The editors of this newsletter freely admit we don't have all the answers.
