CPQ #6 is at the printing press as I type these lines on the 5th of August, 1994, and is due to be out in later this month. This issue is going to have some WWII and lots of stuff on the Spanish Civil War--I have a feeling that some of it will run over into CPQ #8! The title should be: "Everything You Wanted-and Didn't Want to Know- About the Spanish Civil War!" INCOMING Good news and bad news. First the bad--no final CDII points system yet. I am loath to propose a system that will be changed in the near future-and still have several other systems suggested by the players to look at. I am looking at a rewrite of the air rules for CDII. One thought that I think is badly needed is to reduce the damage done by aircraft, but to add a morale modifier of -2 if within 20" of an enemy aircraft when the morale check is made. I have been reading the Air Forces History of close air support and have noticed the effects they report that enemy aircraft have on ground troops. The aircraft values have to be brought in line with one another--and AA modified for the war as a whole. Thoughts on this would be appreciated. I have talked to Frank about working the convention circuit this next year (1995) in our disguise as "The Boys from Central Illinois" and have put together our traveling list of games. If all goes well, we hope to arrive with the following: (Chinese Farm is possible if Frank can find the box of T-55s).
CDII: WWII-The Battle of Mtsensk, 1941. CDII: Post World War II--Goose Green, 1982. UPCOMING ITEMS Looking ahead to CPQ-8 to 11, at this point in time I hope to run the following supplements:
CPQ-9: The Race to Messina: A scaled-down version of the campaign in Sicily in 1943, designed to allow players to compete with each other in that the commanders of the US 7th Army will also command the German-Italian forces facing the British 8thArmy, and the commanders of the British 8th Army will command the Germans facing the Americans. CPQ-10: A "normal" CPQ (if such a beast exists!). CPQ-11: Arab-Israeli War of 1973 (tentative). THE ANSWER TO LAST ISSUE'S QUESTION QUESTION: What do all of the following British units have in common? 3rd King's Royal Rifle Corps, 2nd Rifle Brigade, 42nd Royal Tank Regiment, the Honorable Artillery Company. ANSWER: They are all battalions. THIS ISSUE'S QUESTION QUESTION: What is the farthest inland that a target has ever been hit by US Navy battleship guns fired in combat? DIGITAL DAVE'S POSITION REPORT Here's the deal. This column is here to take up the remaining space on this page because Greg didn't write enough this issue (or at least, in this section, anyway). This column may or may not reappear in future issues of CPQ as gaping expanses of white space dictate. This issue features Part 1 of the big Spanish Civil War supplement. Part 2 will be in CPQ #8 and finishes off the topic by covering the Italian forces in Spain. This issue features the first installment of the effort to systematically present modern military equipment for Command Decision 2. This time I've done main battle tanks of the major nations, but this is not an exhaustivelist by any stretch of the imagination; additional tanks will rear their little turrets as circumstances warrant. Next issue will cover light antitank weapons (ATGMS, unguided rockets, etc.), and beyond that I will deal with APCs and AFVs, helicopters, aircraft, light vehicles, and future systems such as the M8 Armored Gun System, AFAS, NLOS missile, etc. Much of this material was presented as part of the Operation Desert Storm stuff in CPQ #6, but some of the material will be updated and expanded, and a number of systems were simply not rated because they were not used in the Gulf, or were unsuitable for other reasons. For example, I would have included the modern aircraft ratings except that I would have had to also write the new air rules to allow those ratings to appear, and I didn't feel like it. The helicopter ratings in CPQ #6 are provisional for the same reason. Readers are encouraged to cast their votes for the systems, nations, or vehicles they are most anxious to see. One unusual feature to look for in the coming year will be the CD2 ratings for the futuristic vehicles featured in GDW's upcoming Armor 21 roleplaying game. Armor 21 will use the Twilight: 2000 game mechanics, but will be set on the high-tech battlefields of 2020-2030. The vehicle ratings in CPQ will allow the Armor 21 situations to also be resolved with Command Decision, using the miniatures that will be produced for the new game.
