Wilderness V

Report on a Bridge Too Far

by Greg Novak

Wilderness V: A Bridge Too Far was held in Springfield on September 17-19. In all, some 20-plus gamers took part in the threeday event, which resulted in the Allies piercing the German lines and pushing on to Arnhem. Though Allied armor had been unable to cross the Rhine in strength by the end of the game, it was recognized by all that the thrust had resulted in a bridgehead as the Germans were being pushed back out of the city of Arnhem as the game ended.

The commander of 30th Division, Major General Sir Frank Chadwick, managed to keep to the planned timetable and arrived at the Arnhem bridge at the start of the second day. An attempted charge by the light armored vehicles of the Household Cavalry across the Highway Bridge at Arnhem resulted in their being cut to pieces in what was a heroic but futile attack. The 82d Airborne Brigade showed their mettle by not only driving the Germans out of Nijmegen, but then marching north to Arnhem, and helping the 1 st British Airborne Brigade to attack Arnhem as well.

The gaming was marked by a good time by all, with a minimum of problems. Thanks are due to John Holtz and John Van Houton for running a game in the highest traditions of the Wilderness Projects.

NAMWAR National Association of Modern Wargamers

At the end of the Wilderness V: A Bridge Too Far, the gamers who took part decided that they had enjoyed the game so much, they made plans to run a similar game next October, with a tentative date of October 7-9, 1994. This project is to be known as Command Con II: The Ardennes-Again!!, and will be similar to the Wilderness Project in nature. The goal is to stage a refight of the Battle of the Bulge in 20mm using Command Decision H. Future plans include the possibility of doing a large-scale North Africa refight.

    Order of Battle-Frank Chadwick
    Terrain-John Van Houton
