The southern side of the Korean DMZ is defended by the Army of Republic of Korea (more commonly known as ROK) and the US 2nd Infantry Division. Currently, the DMZ is defended on its eastern side by the eight infantry divisions of the 2nd and 3rd Corps under the command of the 1st Army. The western side of the line is defended by the 12 infantry divisions of the 1st, 5th, and 6th Corps, again under the control of the 1st Army. Rear area security units and reserve formations are controlled by the 2nd Army. The sensitive area in front of, and about Seoul is controlled by the combined field army which has the two South Korean mechanized divisions, as well as the US 2nd Infantry Division. 20 Infantry Divisions, each with: Divisional HQ, with:

The 155mm gun on the M-53 uses the weapon characteristics of the Italian M 59 towed 155mm gun. Other details are below. 3. The South Koreans may replace the M-48A5s and the M-113s with the home produced K-1 and KIFV APCs. The M-48A3s in the infantry divisions may be replaced with M48A5s
