Korean War

Introduction

by Greg Novak

The Korean War is one of the most interesting conflicts of the post World War II Period for a number of reasons. It is, after all, no less than three different wars wrapped up In one. One starts with a mobile war between the North Koreans and South Korea. with the South aided by the forces of the UN and the United States. One then proceeds to a most unique war between the foot mobile Chinese Army and the motorized forces of the UN/United States. and ends with a refight of the trench warfare of World War I. It is these first two Periods that are the most Interesting to me. both of which took place In 1950 for the most part.

The first of these conflicts started with the invasion of South Korea on the 25th of June. 1950. The actual cause of the Invasion is still debated to this day. but the evidence seems to indicate that the government of North Korea felt that they were facing a ticking time bomb. In 1950, they held the upper hand In terms of military strength. but looking ahead the advantage would shift to South Korea due to the relative size of the population base. With the governments of both North and South Korea publicly committed to a course of unification. to North Korea it was a case of act now or face a superior South Korea later. possibly mounting an invasion of their own. Thus in June of 1950, after giving due warning to the United States without any response in return. the People's Republic of Korea committed itself to war.
