In addition to these divisions, the Japanese used a mixture of Independent Infantry Brigades in the field. As with their Infantry Divisions, the Japanese Independent Infantry Brigades tended to be formed as needed, with different TO&E's for each brigade. The Infantry Brigade was the usual formation used by the Japanese for local garrisons and missions where an infantry division was not needed, so Allied forces engaged them on a regular basis. The following are examples of the different types of Infantry Brigades found in the field.
