Raider Battalion 1942

In addition to the units of the above organization, the Marine Corps formed several specialized units, including its most famous units of the war, the Marine Raiders. Four such battalions were raised, which were later combined into a special 1st Raider Regiment. Two different establishinents were used by the Raiders.

1st, 3rd, 4th Raider Battalion

    2 MMG stands
    1 engineer stand

4 Rifle Companies, each with:

    1 command stand

    2 infantry stands

2nd Raider Battalion

    1 command stand
    1 support stand

6 Companies each with

    1 command stand
    2 recon raider stands
    1 weapons stand

Notes

1. In the 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions, companies were lettered A to D, and Weapons Company, while the 2nd Battalions companies were lettered A to F.

2. The 1st Raider Battalions Command and Weapons stands had in 1942 integral Boys AT Rifles.

3. Note that only the 2nd Battalion has Raider Infantry Stands as they used a different organization, the forerunner of the Marine Corps platoon of 1944-45.

4. When combined into the 1st Marine Raider Regiment, the 1st Battalion had companies A to D, 2nd Battalion was assigned, but did not use E to H, the 3rd Battalion had I to M (not using J), and the 4th Battalion used N to Q.

5. The 2nd Marine Raider Regiment (Provisional) was organized for the operations on Bougainville, using the 2nd and 3rd Raider Battalions.
