The surrender of Corregidor on May 6th, 1942 removed this regiment from the Marine Corps rolls for the time being, but the 4th Marines were not to be forgotten. Elsewhere in the Pacific, the 6th Defense Battalion, currently stationed on Midway, learned that it was to be the next target for the Japanese fleet. Remembering that the defenders of Wake lacked manpower, it was determined that the same mistake would not happen again. Elements of the 3rd Defense Battalion, and the 2nd Raider Battalion were sent there, so that on the 1st of June, 1942, the 6th Marine Battalion had the following on the island awaiting a Japanese attack. 6th MARINE DEFENSE BATTALIONMidway Island, June 1st
