The following rules errata and clarifications need to be added to OVER THE TOP. I must apologize for some of the problems, but others are due to the fact that the manuscript was turned in in 1988 and as Command Decision tends to be an ungoing set of rules, we (and the players) keep coming up with new and better means of handling things. 1. The German Infantry Line was left off Page 50. It should read:
2. The Direct Fire Artillery rules are really muddled. To start with, the Shrapnel value of all weapons needs to be reduced by one (They were in the playtest, but ended up being changed at a later date.) The actual rule for shrapnel should read as follows: Direct fire shrapnel is always on target. Place the template over the area fired at, and then check for hits with a d10, always modifying the roll by giving benefit of cover. Thus shrapnel fired at a stationary unit has a modifier of -1. A German 77mm fires two rounds shrapnel into an 2" by 2" area where three stationary British Infantry Stands are located. The Shrapnel value of the 77 is 2, -1 for stationary target. The German player would have 2 rolls for a 1 on each stand in the area. Players firing Direct HE Fire need to target a stand. Direct fire HE needs to roll to see if it is on target. If on target, one hit is automatically inflicted, and and firing player gets to roll for a second, based on the value of the firing weapon. No cover bonus is allowed for this second shot. Thus 18 lbr gun firing HE at a German stand which hits, inflicts one hit, and needs to roll a 3 or less for a second. If the die roll to hit misses, then the British player still gets to roll one die for a possible hit, but needs to give the German stand all benefit of cover. 3. In the Armistice Day Scenario, the Russian gunboats start the game off the southeast edge of the board. They may enter at 08:00. The rivers current runs downstream from the southeast edge to the northeast edge, so the flotilla enters the board at the downstream rate, and must exit at the upstream rate.
