Thoughts on Strafing

P-38 Runs

by Bill McHarg

The aircraft strafing rules seem to work pretty well, but I have a question that I would like to throw out for comment. They seem at time to be more a simulation of "Hollywood" strafing attacks. I was recently watching the episode of the TV show Wings on the P-38, and there was quite a bit of ground attack footage, both from gun cameras and also from a wing mounted camera that filmed an entire mission.

When the P-38s made a strafing run, they picked out ONE vehicle, and flew towards it, firing at that one vehicle. There wasn't the "beaten zone" that the strafing rules seem to simulate. I realize that each attack simulates four aircraft, but by the same token, each model is four vehicles.

If any of the readers has actual experience with making air attacks, or has instruction manuals from the period, perhaps they could share their information. It could be that the footage that I saw was atypical.

Also, I would be interested in any good data on the extent that enemy formations are attacked from the air during an actual battle. This would seem to require careful coordination to avoid hitting friendly troops. Perhaps most attacks from the air should be in a campaign setting, rather then a tactical setting.
