French Foreign Legion

Painting Guide

by Robert P. Frazier

I had lots of trouble finding good sources for the French Foreign Legion in North Africa in the 1870 to 1890 period. After some exhaustive searching, I turned up a copy of Uniforms of the French Foreign Legion and Funcken's book on European armies of this time period, both of which had a few illustrations. How I painted my Stone Mountain 15mm figures is shown in Figure 3.

    1. Kepi & Havlock - WHITE
    2. Trousers - WHITE
    3. Leggings - WHITE
    4. Tunic - DARK BLUE
    5. Sash - LT. BLUE
    6. Tent - OFFWHITE
    7. Mess Tin - GUN METAL
    8. Pack - DARK GREY
    9. Shoes - BLACK

Not illustrated are the cartridge box and the sword frog. I painted the cartridge box white as well as the belt on the sword frog. The frog/scabbard itself I painted gun metal and highlighted it with silver. Artillerists are painted the same way, being normal Legionaires trained to man the guns.

Officers were regular members of the French Army detailed to the

Legion. They wore red Kepi's, blue tunics, and red pants. Their epaullettes are red with green shoulder boards.

Cavalry figures can be painted as mounted Legionaires, as each Legion battalion had a group of mounted infantry. Another option is to paint them as Chasseurs d'Afrique.
