The Sapper's Report

Fold-Away Rivers and Roads

By William A. Greenwald

Fig. 1 This construction project will provide the Gamer with fold-away rivers and roads that not only look good, but can be set into almost any shape. No more waste of costly blue tape on your game table.

The raw materials are so easily obtained, and the construction is so simple, that all the roads, streams, rivers, etc. that you will ever need can be made in a short time. When the game is through, these terrain pieces can be folded for easy storage -- the concept is that of a folding ruler.

Fig. 2 The materials needed are stiff paper (or similar sheets of mylar) of approp riate color (clear mylar can be spray painted from the underside), a hole punch and scissors. First determine the width of the river or road (no smaller than 1/2 in.) and then cut pieces with a length of 6 to 8 inches of the width desired. The sections can be straight, curved or "5" shaped as desired. Next, round the ends of each piece in a curve whose diameter is the width of the piece (see fig. 1). Use a paper hole punch to make a hole in the center of the curved ends of each piece (see fig. 1). Next cut 1/2 inch diameter circles of the same material as shown in fig. 2A. Also cut along the dotted lines. Fold these circle pieces as in fig. 2B. Remember that circle pieces of less than 1/2 in. could be difficult to assemble. Finally, assemble as shown

The overall length of the complete terrain piece would need to be determined by the builder. At any rate, any extra length can be folded back as to be out of the way.
