Battle of Cross Keys and Port Republic

Semi-historical ACW scenario
for "ON TO RICHMOND"

By Paul Koch

This scenario is a simplified reconstruction of one of the most brilliant and desperate battles of Stonewall Jackson's famous Valley campaign. As in the past this has been simplified from the historical example but the problems faced by the historical commanders have been reproduced.

Jackson's Valley army is camped between Port Republic and the fork in the map. Their task is simple but desperate. They must inflict maximum casualties on Union forces under Fremont advancing from the left while keeping their line of retreat open across the river. Union forces approach from both ends of the board.

UNION OB & INITIAL DEPLOYMENT

Fremont's Corps enters from each road (Points C & D) (1 division on each on turn 1). John C. Fremont (Poltroon), 2 Divisions, each of 3 brigades and 2 Arty. Battalions (1 Rifled, 1 Smoothbore). Five of the Brigades have 6 stands, and one has 8. There is also a (GREEN) Cavalry Brigade of 8 stds.

At the other end of the board there are 2 Union brigades (one of 6 stands, the other of 8) from Shields' division. They arrive separately on the right hand bank of the river (Point A). They arrive at turn 1 with a roll 9, on turn 2 with a roll of 8 or 9 etc. -rolling separately for each Brigade. The smaller Brigade has a Battalion of 12# Napoleons attached. It is wise to make up different movement cards for each of these brigades, for while they both belong to the same division (Shields) their CO will not be present. The mission of these troops is to block the bridge over the river. The river is the swollen Shenandoah and most certainly unfordable. Except where noted, roll for quality of all Union troops and COs as per the rules.

CONFEDERATE OB & INITIAL DEPLOYMENT

The Army of the Valley is in two divisions. Jackson's Division under the personal command of "Stonewall" Jackson (exceptional) contains three 8 stand Brigades. Two of which are rated as VETERANS and one is rated ELITE. It has 2 Battalions of Smoothbore Artillery. Ewell's Division under R.S. Ewell (aggressive) also has three 8 stand brigades and 2 Arty. Btns, 1 of which is Rifled and Elite (The Washington Artillery). The Confederate Cavalry under Turner Ashby (firebrand) has 6 stds and rated elite. The Southern horsemen also have carbines whereas their Northern counterparts do not. Ewell's Brigades should rank as 1 each of regular, veteran and elite.

OBJECTIVE

Jackson's forces are to destroy as much of Fremont's force as possible for 10 turns and then exit the board via the road at Point B. If they fail to do this they lose. The Confederates will also lose if their own loss is over 75% of what they infIict.
