This issue brings to a close the theme year for THE SUDAN. I am sure you will agree with me that it was one of the best presented themes to date. Many thanks to Lynn Bodin who put in so much effort while still maintaining his own SAVAGE& SOLDIER magazine on schedule. Lynn is not quite finished. There are several Sudan articles that will be printed next year including one on the uniforms of the British and their allies (a companion to the Mahdist Army piece in last issue). Next year's theme is the Age of Sail, edited by Jon Williams, author of Heart of Oak Sailing Rules and several Napoleonic Period sailing novels published by Dell. Jon has many great articles planned but wants some from the readers as well. Tell us about your age-of-sail battles and rules. Send articles to Jon c/o The Courier. While on the subject of themes, this issue presents a mini-theme that is a favorite of mine and has not seen much interest up to now. The Franco-Prussian War. Here is a period of incongruities! Machine guns and horse artillery; charging Cuirasseurs and Krupp breech-loading artillery; both colorful and reasonably easy-to-paint uniforms. Let me know if you want to see more of these thumb-nail mini-themes for little-gamed periods in the future and suggest some subjects.
