by Paul A. Koch
Paul Koch is a Political Scientist and Historian living in Loma Linda, California. He taught history and political science at Columbia Union College, Georgetown University and Bryn Mawr. A long time board gamer and player of toy soldiers, Paul was introduced to miniature wargaming in his adult life by Peter Young's Charge or How to play Wargames. His now long standing friendships with Ed Konstant and Lee Tucker won him over to miniature gaming some 12 years ago. To this day it is the aesthetics of beautifully painted figures and attractive, realistic terrain that arouses his greatest admiration. So much so that Paul refers to himself as as "moving dioramist" as opposed to a gamer. The actual playing of war games ranks well down his list of priorities, coming below painting, converting, research and rules writing. This is not to say that "Doc" as his students call him is not an active gamer. Almost every week end finds his game room ablaze with miniature combat. Paul's collection boasts large armies in 30mm Pike & Shot, 20mm Napoleonics, 20mm Franco-Prussian, HO WWN in three fronts, and his enormous 20mm Civil War armies. He is presently engaged in two long time projects of painting Napoleonic (Foremost & Surens) 30mm armies of Waterloo and converting and scratch building the Armies of the Battle of Aliwal in the 1st Sikh War. Paul is most well known to readers of THE COURIER as the author of On to Richmond and to some for his continual column On the Western Front in the PW REVIEW. He hopes to bring to THE COURIER articles not only on our Civil War but through out the period between Waterloo and Mons. On to Richmond Scenario: Frayser's Farm
