The Vanguard

Editorial

by Dick Bryant

Once again The Courier has won the HG WELLS Award for Best Professional Magazine covering Miniatures. Presented at Origins '83, the award continues the string started in our first year of publication. Many thanks to authors and editors who made it possible and to all of you who voted our nomination. In adjusting our cover "blurb" about the HG WELLS award, I was embarrassed to discover that I had been misrepresenting our "Years". The Award given in 1980 was for 1979, etc. The banner has been corrected.

NEXT YEAR'S THEME

With over 500 votes tallied, the theme year decided on by our readers. THE SUDAN edited by Lynn Bodin and Doug Johnson, Editor and Founder respectively of the well known Colonial period magazine SAVAGE AND SOLDIER. Both are well respected authorities in the period and are sure to give us a banner theme year.

I weighted the voting as follows: first choice 2 pts; second choice, 1 pt. highest score being the winner. There were 562 voters casting 1686 points. The results were

    1. The Sudan;
    2. Napoleonic Naval;
    3. Northwest Frontier
    4. Mexican American War;
    5. Franco Prussian War.
There were about 18 other periods "written in".

EXTENDED SUBSCRIPTION OFFER

On the Volley Fire page you will see that we have finally succumbed to very many requests that we get for a long term subscription. We offer a 5 and 10 year sub at substantial savings. NO! This is NOT a "lifetime subscription - far be it from us to get into the hassle that recently besmirched the boardgame side of the hobby. These subs are based on reasonable expectation that we will be in business another 10 years. Your support will be appreciated.

ON TO RICHMOND

Paul Koch has completely revised and updated the On To Richmond rules printed in The Courier last year. He added a campaign system, optiional rules, army point system, new rules for rough terrain as well as fire and movement, and variants for the Franco Prussian and Napoleonic period. Courier has published these as a separate rule booklet available from ter hobby shops" and or from The Courier Supply Depot.

NEXT YEAR

Besides a new theme, the next issue will introduce a whole slew of editors and a Skirmish Gaming Section. The Skirmish Gaming Section will cover the wide area of historical one-on-one and small unit gaming as well as HISTORICAL miniature role play gaming. The section, edited by Wally Simon, is the first in several steps being taken in the hope of increasing frequency and timeliness of The Courier. More on all that next time.
