Painting the Mercenaries
of Ancient Times

by Jay Hadley

For several years Dick Bryant has been after me to do an article about painting the skin colors of ancient armies. just to show Bryant that I can get around to doing an occasional article here it is. I do, however, agree with Dick that there is a critical need for an authoritative answer to the question of the skin tone difference of a Meshwesh and a Weshwesh. No expense has been spared in the attempt to put together this information. Why, I must have spent at least 45 minutes researching the topic.

The colors you need to paint all ancient mercenaries are brown, yellow and especially red. The following is a chart listing ancient tribes and nations that are known to be mercenaries complete with color ratios.
