This issue contains the first in a series of articles describing a revolutionary concept in wargaming by George Jeffrey. George's revolutionary VARIABLE LENGTH BOUND (TURN) and his application of TRUE SCALE in stand depth as well (as is usual) in stand width, provides the ability to simulate in terms of actual men, ammunition expenditure rates, true marching and formation change rates etc. with a resulting several orders of magnitude improvement in realism WITHOUT LOSS OF PLAYABILITY! I won't comment further except to say that I believe when fully implemented it will put all present miniature rule systems in the same realism category as those of H. G. Wells'! I look forward to the readers' comments. It has been brought to my attention that few miniature gamers are joining the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design. This is the group that determines the winners of the Origins Awards - H.G. Wells and Charles Grant. Without miniature enthusiast participation, rules writers, figure manufacturers and other contributors to the Historical Miniature Hobby will never be recognized for their contribution. Only FRP and Boardgaming will be effectively covered! While there are some restrictions on memberships, these are loose enough that anyone that has had two articles published or has been involved in putting on a convention with as little as 100 participants is eligible. Many of you complain about the direction the hobby is taking - here is a chance to participate in awarding those contributors who are pushing the hobby the way you would like to see it go. Make your voice heard! join - it costs only $2.00 per year. Empire Games, Inc. has seen fit to stop doing business with THE COURIER. There was no particular indication that this was due to our recent review of Empire III or to their recently announced cooperation with WARGAMER'S DIGEST. It is a sad day for the hobby if the former is the case. Several of our product reviews have been negative as we believe that we should give the most honest opinion of which we are capable as a service to our readers. Yet, here-to-fore, no company so reviewed, ever withdrew or threatened to withdraw a product or advertising from this magazine. The people hurt are those who would buy Empire Games products through the one money saving avenue available - The Courier Supply Depot. THE COURIER will always stand by its policy of "calling them as we see them" and will not be dictated to buy any individual or company. We will continue to sell Empire Games material while stocks last. Any monies in hand for which there is no stock will be returned. PRICE INCREASEA 67% typeset increase and a 25% printing cost increase have forced us to increase prices once again! Effective 1 Jan '82, a U.S. subscription will cost $12.75/yr.; Canada and Foreign surface will cost $14.25; and foreign airmail will be $30. Single issues in the U.S. will be $2.75 ea. Back issues are $3.25 in the U.S.; $3.50 foreign surface; $5.00 foreign air.
