Royal Swedish Pomeranian Legion

1813-1814

by Dan Schorr

In the Spring of 1813, following the end of the French occupation of Swedish Pomerania, numerous volunteers flocked to the Swedish forces in the hopes of joining in the coming campaign against Napoleon. From some of these volunteers a Swedish Pomeranian Legion was formed. It consisted of a mounted Legion of 60 men under the command or Fittmeister Ernst von Quistorp, and a company of foot of about 100 men under the command of Major C.A. Bleumer. In July 1813 the Legion was ordered to join the Swedish headquarters as headquarters guards.

The Legion performed this service throughout the 1813-1814 campaign, including the battles of Grossbeeren, Dennewitz, and Leipzig, the campaign against Denmark, and later into Belgium. The Legion returned to Pomerania in June 1814 and was disbanded in Stralsund.
