The Wars Of The Roses Timeline

1455-1485

Last issue we printed a set of rules, Warlord and an army listing for The war of The roses. There was no room for this timeline which we include now. --Ed.

1455: First Battle Of St. Albans. Richard of York and Warwick meet and defeat Lancastrian force under Somerset. Somerset is killed. Richard captures Henry VI, and declares himself Constable of England.

1455-1459: Queen Margaret and her supporters take control of the government. Henry and his faction are left out of the government.

1459: Battle Of Blore Heath. The Earl of Salisbury (York) defeats a Lancatrian army.

1459: Richard And Warwick Flee. Henry and Margaret with a royal army advance on Richards castle Ludlow. Many of Richards supporters switch sides. Richard flees to Ireland, Warwick to Calais.

1460: June. Warwick (Y) returns and takes London.

1460: July. Battle of Northampton. Warwick (Y) defeats a Lancastrian force marching on London. Henry is again captured. Richard (Y) returns from Ireland and claims the throne. Parliament confirms Richard as king for his lifetime. Queen Margaret (L) raises an army in the north. Richard and his son Edmund march to meet it. Richards son Edward marched west to deal with a revolt.

1460: December. Battle Of Wakefield. The northern Lancastrian army ambush Richards army. The army is defeated and both Richard and Edmund are killed. The victorious army (L) advances towards London.

1461: 2 February. Battle of Mortimer’s Cross. Edward, Duke of York (Richards son) defeats a Lancastrian army. Many captured nobles are executed.

1461: Second Battle of St. Albans. Warwick (Y) attacks a Lancastrian army and is defeated. King Henry is re-captured. Edward and Warwick (Y) move to London and proclaim Edward king. Henry moves to Yorkshire. Edward pursues and defeats a small (L) force at Ferrybridge.

1461: 29 March. Battle of Towton. Edward defeats Henry in a snowstorm. Henry IV, his son Prince Edward and Queen Margaret retreat to Scotland.

1464: Battle of Hedgeley Moore

1464: 25 April. Warwick’s brother defeats a Lancastrian army commanded by Sir Ralph Percy.

1464: 15 May. Battle of Hexam. A Lancastrian defeat, Margaret and Prince Edward flee to France. Henry VI goes into hiding. This battle leads to the execution of many Lancastrian supporters. Henry is caught and jailed.

1469: Rebellion of Robin of Redesdale. Warwick and Edwards younger brother help to influence a Lancastrian revolt in the north.

1469: The Battle of Edgecote This force defeats the Earl of Pembroke’s army before Edward can join it. Edward joins Warwick only to be held captive. Warwick begins to plot with the Lancastrian faction.

1470: March. Battle of “Lose-Coat” Field. A northern Lancastrian is defeated. The leader, Sir Robert Welles confesses that Warwick and Edwards brother were behind the revolt. They both flee to France where through the French king they re-join the Lancastrian cause through Queen Margaret with French aid.

1470: September-October. Revolt in Yorkshire. A Lancastrian revolt in the north draws Edward out of London. Warwick lands in Dartmouth. He takes London and releases Henry from prison an restored to power. Edward flees to Flanders, there he seeks help from his brother-in-law, Charles the Bold.

1471: Minor Lancastrian revolts are dealt with by the Yorkist side. March. Edward returns with a mercenary army is rejoined by his brother Clarence and occupies London.

1471: 14 April. Battle of Barnet. Yorkist victory. Warwick is killed. Queen Margaret and Prince Edward land in England.

1471: April-May. The Tewkesbury Campaign. Queen Margaret and Prince Edward attempt to flee to Wales. They join the remnants of Warwick’s army. They are attacked by Edward near Tewkesbury.

1471: 4 May. Battle Of Tewkesbury A Yorkist victory. Prince Edward is killed and Queen Margaret is captured. Many Lancastrian nobles are murdered.

1471: 21 May. Henry VI is murdered in the Tower of London.

1475: Edward Declares War On France. Edwards crosses the Channel, allied with Charles the Bold of Burgundy. Louis XI negotiates with Edward who calls off the war for a settlement.

1483: 9 April. Edward Dies. Edward V, son of Edward is king. Richard of Gloucester acts a regent.

1483: 26 June. Richard III Takes The Crown. Many nobles unhappy with a child king follow suit.

1483: October. Duke of Buckingham Revolts The Duke is the new head of the Lancastrian side. The rebellion is crushed.

1483 - 1485: Unrest And Disorder. Richard is assumed to have had Edward V and his brother murdered in The Tower.

1485: Invasion By Henry Tudor. A force of French mercenaries land at Milford Haven under Henry. His army marches north, picking up strength along the way.

1485: 22 August. The battle of Bosworth Field. Richard is betrayed on all sides. He is killed, ending the Yorkist line and The Wars of the Roses. - Henry Tudor is crowned Henry VII.
