In this issue we conclude Ian Croxall’s piece on the French Colonial Activities in North Africa - several scenarios for the period. If anybody out there has a similarly researched articles on other periods, I certainly would like to see them. Thievery at Conventions Jay Hadley, President of HMGS-East recently issued a stern warning to shoplifters and sneak thieves working the conventions.(They will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and they will be banned from all HMGS-east conventions. In addition their names will be made available to the other convention organizers.) Evidently there was an increased incidence of such activity at Fall In! 2000. There may have actually been a team working the dealers area - one gets the attention of the man behind the table, while another shoves merchandise into his back pack or whatever. I have been going to conventions for over 30 years and it is only recently (last 5 years or so) that we have experienced such problems. Most gamers always felt that other gamers (which include most dealers) were part of “the family” and one did not steal from one’s family. I remember being able to leave figures and terrain unattended at a game table to grab lunch - dealers were able to just cover their tables with a sheet (the dealer tables were then placed around the walls of the gaming area,) and never lost a thing! I would hope that gamers would become involved and if they see someone shoplifting of stealing figures, etc at a convention, they would turn that person in. First he/she is not someone we want in this hobby and it costs us all in the long run. The lost of trust and the added cost to the dealers rebounds on us all.
