The Vanguard

Editorial

by Dick Bryant

No editor likes to start off his editorial with an apology - but I owe one to Jim Arnold. In the Marengo article last issue I neglected to point out that the map on page 8 was from Jim’s new book, Marengo and Hohenlinden. The book was reviewed in The Courier, # 77. Jim’s work has appeared in The Courier from almost its inception, as both an author of historical works of some note and an avid wargamer, Jim brings to his books a certain approach that make them particularly useful to wargamers in generating scenarios based on the battles described. Look elsewhere in this issue for a special offer on this book.

THE FRENCH COLONIAL WARS IN ALGERIA-MOROCCO

In this issue we begin what has to be the most complete work we have ever been able to present on a gaming period. Ian Croxall of WarFlag has put together an exhaustive study of the French Colonial Wars in North Africa. They are so detailed that we have to present them in two parts (at least). The first part that is in this issue gives all the historical background to these actions, the organization of the armies and forces that were involved, their tactics, etc. The 2nd part will provide the necessary information for wargaming the period.

I only wish that I had articles of this level to cover every colonial period. If there is anyone out there who would like to take a stab at meeting Ian’s challenge in some other colonial (or, for that matter, any not-often-gamed period) I would certainly like to work with him to present it to our readers.

THE COURIER WEBSITE

Many of you have been having trouble getting to the “Members” section of The Courier website. It is because the mail house who does the mailing labels dropped off the last digit of your CODE number on your address labels. We have corrected that in this issue - at least I have been promised that it is corrected. You will understand that I am writing this editorial before I have seen the address labels on the printed issue. so please try again and let us know if you are having problems. Also please drop me a note at MGluteus@aol.com with suggestions as to what you would like to see on the website. Be sure to check out the Historical Timeline of the hobby and let us know if you have any facts that should be modified or included.

THE GAMELOFT WINS IMPORTANT NATIONAL AWARD

In issue #78 we reported on The Gameloft which was using Wargaming as a way to help keep kids off the streets and get them into something more constructive than just “hanging around”. I am pleased to announce that Ray and Patricia Estabrook, whose idea the Gameloft is and who have put all their energies into its success, are among the 51 finalists (of 14,000) for the Jefferson Award presented by the American Institute for Public Service. The award is granted to individuals working to inspire civic commitment among young people. My most Hearty Congratulations!
