Cold Wars '95
Draws Record
1600 Gamers

By Dick Bryant

The winter spectacular in Lancaster, PA drew 1600 gamers from the eastern Seaboard to participate in over 150 games and visit 59 dealer booths. Just about every manufacturer and major distributor was represented. There seemed to be more W.W.II and modern period games than has been the case of late, including several W.W.II naval games. Larry Bond demonstrated his new Command at Sea rule set for the period in several trials - the rules are, as might be expected, an offshoot of Harpoon and are sold by Clash of Arms games.

Rich Hasenhauer (Fire & Fury) did some B level testing of his soon-to-be-published W.W.II rules (as yet unnamed) on his, as usual, magnificent terrain made up of very simple materials. Speaking of terrain, the best of show had to be the 6mm Franco-Prussian game that ran in the Paradise Room. The modeler had visited the actual battlefield in Europe, taken pictures and from a contour map of the field constructed a battle area that was indistinguishable from the actual field. I at first thought the photos were of the table, not of the actual battle field! I am sorry that I did not get his name and hope that he will drop me a line, if he reads this, with details on how he made it. The Courier staff ran a series of games in the Paradise room, four on Friday, and six on Saturday. The highlight was Jim Birdseyes Forlorn Hope game with Sharpe and his rifles leading the attack on the breach at Cuidad Rodrigo. Beautiful terrain and interesting rules.

A highlight at Cold Wars is the now regular Military and Naval History Forum initiated by Jim Birdseye. This year's event had 8 papers covering subjects from 1775 to the modern period - fascinating stuff. Copies of the papers are available - see the review section of this issue for details.

The Ancient tourney was again well attended attracting 130 players. Scott Holder reports that DBA, DBM and 7th edition WRG each drew about the same number of players. The increased interest in 25mm DBA has prompted Scott to run a tournament at Historicon 95. The demonstration games were full as was a ancients skirmish game run by Larry Essick and the Plains of Illium run by Tom McMillen. As is usual, the tournament was sponsored by many including, Mr. Miniature, MiniFig, Quartermaster, Outland games, Ral Partha, Campaign HQ, Simtac, On Military Matters, Gladiator/Two Dragons, Wargames, Old glory, Viking forge, 19th Century Miniatures, Pharoahs Arms, and the Armory.
