Keep the Carpetbaggers Out!

By Paladin

ED NOTE: from time-to-time, we have received anonymous opinion essays concerning the hobby by someone who calls himself Paladin. We do not ordinarily publish anonymous correspondence, but these may prove interesing - sort of a wargamer's Federalist Papers.

If the rumors I hear are true, it would seem that an unpleasant trend is developing in HMGS East. It started a couple of years ago when Todd Fisher, a member of HMGS Midwest Board of Directors, resigned that position in order to run, successfully, for a similar position in HMGS East.

Word now is that Rick Nance, a member of HMGS Heart of America Board of Directors, is resigning that position to run for a seat on the Board of Directors at HMGS East.

While I guess we should welcome new members to any HMGS chapter, I question the motives of individuals who transfer their allegiance (but not their domiciles) to a different chapter. What is it that would attract someone from another chapter to the East? Certainly not the membership benefits. Could it be the money?

HMGS East has the largest treasury (which is controlled by the Board of Directors) of any chapter, the result of running highly successful conventions for almost a dozen years. HMGS East members might not be happy with the supposed lack of progress for the Chapter in creating programs for the hobby, but I am sure there are enough talented, qualified members in the East who can replace the conservatives without allowing in outsiders who seemed to be lured by the riches of the east.

With possible moderate candidates like J. T. Thomas, Toby Barrett, Tom Desmond, and Bill Grey, HMGS East members have some excellent choices without resorting to the old line conservatives, radicals, or carpetbaggers moving in. Vote in your elections and keep the carpetbaggers out!
