Overijssel colors

By Dan Schorr
Illustrations by Mike Tyson

Nos. 27 thru 30 might possible represent colors of regiments from the province of Overijssel. However, the coat-of-arms illustrated on these colors varied from the present-day coat-of-arms of Overijssel which has a red lion on a gold field with 'one" blue wavy bar 'behind" the lion. The colors of two Overijssel regiments probably were captured when the cities in which they were part of the garrison surrendered to the French: Mulert at Mons in July 1746, and Bentinck at Namur in October 1746.

27. Probably a Second Color. A blue Field. In the center the coat-of-arms of Overijssel (?): a fold shield with a red lion and two wavy bars of blue over white. Two gold lion supporters, and a gold crown lined red with red and blue jewels on its base. The second points of the crown on both the left and right are white. Below the coat-of-arms a white ribbon without inscription. The trophy of arms consists of a red flag, a white standard, and a grayish-white flag from top to bottom on both sides. The cannon barrels are gray and die drums red with white drumheads. A gold wreath with red flowers tied together with a white ribbon.

28. Probably the Principal Color of the same regiment as No. 27. A white Field. In the center the coat-of-arms of Overijssel (?) (see No.27). Below the coat-of-arms a white ribbon without inscription. The trophy of arms consists of a red flag, a white standard, and a light blue flag from top to bottom on both sides. Finials and cords are gold. The cannon barrels are silver and the drums dark brown with white drumheads. The wreath is gold with a greenish tinge and red flowers, and tied with a light blue ribbon.

29. A white field and in each corner a silver/steel colored suit of armor, a gold cannon barrel and coming from each suit of armor three gold threads. In the center the coat-of-arms of Overijssel(?) (see No.27). The crown is gold lined red with blue and red jewels on its base.

30. A white Field and in each corner a silver/steel colored suit of armor and a gold cannon barrel. Along the edges silver vine with a greenish tinge and red flowers. In the center the coat-of-arms of Overijssel (?) (see No. 27), bur the blue and white wavy bars are missing. The crown is gold lined red with blue and red jewels on its base. The second points on the right and left are white.
