The Vanguard

Editorial

Yeah! This issue is late. We have been on time or 2 yearsnow, though some still joke about our delivery dates as they just don't seem to realize that The Courier has been arriving every 3 months like clockwork. Well the clock broke!

This time it was in my computer and no sooner had it been fixed than Joe Miceli (he does the lay-out and final "mechanicals") lost access to his computer for a period of time the result: one month late. The December issue will be out on time!

The leaves are turning, winter is on the way that season when gamers get most of their painting done especially painting services. I note the enormous increase in the number of people offering painting services and, in spite of the recession, the large number of painted armies that are sold at conventions, many for some very hefty prices. Does this reflect the "greying of the hobby" (we 'Old Guard' can't see to paint well enough anymore), or are we finding that in this fast paced society we have to trade dollars for time spent on the hobby. Perhaps newer gamers, coming from boardgaming side of the hobby where everything comes ready-to-go in a box or those from the RPG side, used to 5 10 figure adventure groups, are appalled at having to paint hundreds if not thousands of figures. I would like to receive your thoughts on the subject.

Of late, we have been getting many articles that seem to come in two sizes, one very short; 1/2 to 1 1/2 pages when printed or very long; 12 to 20 pages when printed. The latter causes me some problems as such large articles make it difficult to cover many periods in any one issue and I am constitutionally against multi-part articles, especially in a Quarterly. Yet many of these articles will not stand deep cuts as there is too much good information in them. So you may be subjected to some multi-part articles (no more than two parts) in the future. I promise to keep them to a minimum.

Authors remember that each article should run about 15-30 pages double spaced less one page for each photo and 2/3 pages for each map. This gives us articles 3-6 pages long in The Courier. Thanks.
