We thought it might be interesting to publish and respond to some of the letters we've received over the past several months. Dear GPG, Having just read through most of issue #3, I felt compelled to write. When I saw your ad in Computer Gaming World (I have been an avid computer gamer since 1989), 1 was intrigued. It seemed as though someone had read my mind and come up with a gaming magazine just for me. When I saw your ad again in Command, that was it. I sent in for a trial subscription and I must say that I am outrageously pleased with GameFix. My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that I wish the magazine was more lengthy. And I cannot tell you what it meant to me to he able to play Thapsos twice through(!) the first time I sat down with it, and in less than 90 minutes. I also enjoyed Alexandria (classical ancient history being a favorite period for me). Crisis 2000 was fantastic, and I look forward eagerly to Chicken of the Sea. Additionally, I have greatly enjoyed Dave Wood's Armchair Gamer series, and I sincerely hope it has been read by every game designer out there. Indeed, I hope that some have read it two or three times. Please extend my subscription for 12 more issues.
Thank you Mr. Troutman. Endorsements like that add a lot of wind to our sails. Dear Mr. Compton, I have a request. Why not have at least some autographed copies for your subscribers? I for one would like to have every issue's contents page or cover autographed by the game author, and the articles authors. I believe that these will increase the issue's later value. Would you consider such an offering to those interested, even at an extra cost? (hopefully nominal....) In fact, I would really like to have a copy of the premier issue with everyone's autograph! Well, maybe not the die cutter or the printer, but you know what I mean. Anyway, I for one, truly appreciate you guys doing [GameFix]. It looks like a substantial contribution to the field. Good luck and you're in my prayers.
Thanks, Danny. Interesting suggestion, but the cost would be nowhere near nominal. We would have to mail each issue to about six different places just to get everyone's signature. The cost of that alone would be pretty prohibitive. I suppose we could do something like that, but we'd probably charge about $20.00 an issue to do it, and you'd have to wait about six to eight weeks for delivery! Still interested? Dear GPG, Regarding Dave [Wood's] review columns. This is the first time I've actually seen them, though I've obviously been hearing about them for months. I read them all very carefully several times, and I just can't see where there is much merit in the "he's trying to trash GMT" theory (which, by the way, is the feedback I've had directly from about a dozen gamers who subscribe to GameFix). Most of the comments that were directed toward the Waterloo game were, I thought fair and well supported. Dave obviously has no taste in colorful counters (1 had one guy tell me that he went out and bought the game because of the counter pictures in GameFix, so I guess I owe you one!), but his editing/layout comments were, at least for me, very instructive. It's too bad he just happened to get the one game of ours that really got away from us in terms of rules, but I've already implemented several things that I heard he had said into our last two rulebooks.
I think this letter has been the most gratifying of all those we've received, Gene. Even though you have disagreements with the way Dave goes about making his point, you didiA dismiss him out of hand, and that is to your benefit. In our opinion, the industry would do well to pay some attention to the substance of what Dave has to say. Many folks may really dislike his opinions; but if it improves the overall quality of the industry's products, everyone benefits including his detractors. We're willing to take a few hits to accomplish that.
