Our Turn

The Rest of the World

by Joe Miranda

Recently the United Nations Disarmament Commission, in response to complaints from several member nations about crimes being committed with US manufactured small arms, has proposed tighter controls on US civilian arms exports.

On a related front, several nations have complained about the US government's use of Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to pressure them into accepting American tobacco products. Further; several industrial firms headquartered in the United States routinely dump toxic wastes in Third World nations, effectively exporting poisons.

Given that US forces have been used to enforce American drug laws in several Latin American countries, it is not unreasonable to expect that other nations will want to do something similar to America. Conceivably these circumstances could lead to an international peacekeeping force assigned to police the US. It will be interesting to see which side existing American security forces would support were this to come to pass!
