The Siege of Chitral

1895

Guard Details

'At the main west gate were ten soldiers, and at the garden entrance six. Each of the four parapets had ten men hold off for it, and each of the four towers absorbed another six. There were ten soldiers employed to look after the Chitralis. Campbell's covered way had a picket of twenty, the watertower twenty-five, and the stables a similar number, while the doorway leading out into the stables was guarded by ten sikhs. After we had gone over the list many times in consultation, it was found impossible to reduce this total. The only guards were six men over the Sepoys Snider ammunition; that of the Sikhs (Martini Cartridges) was kept at the maingate. One hundred and sixty- seven fighting men remained for other possible work, sorties, reinforcements, and so forth. On the whole, we had not just cause to complain, and, provided that the Kashmir Rifles "come again", we should take a great deal of beating."
