This is a Franco-Italian battle, and lays the foundation for their future cooperation against Austria in 1859. The British contribution was limited to a battery of heavy field guns in support of the French zouaves, and Scarlett's cavalry division in massed reserve.

This engagement marked the first blooding of the Sardinian army since their defeat at the hands of Radetsky in 1849. According to Calthorpe, the British troops were impressed with the ability of the "Sardines" and their leader "General la Marmalade"

Wargaming the Battle of Tchernaya River

Predictably, my local group uses BNIII and the Crimean War expansion. For purposes of the scenario, Read is assigned "#22. Gloryhound" to his Commander Rating; whenever the Russian CinC rolls an unmodified 01-06 on his initiative, Read will charge the nearest Allied-held position.

No "Captain's Hill."

Gortschakoff wasted nearly two hours than morning riding back and forth among his subordinate commands looking for a vantage point from which to conduct the battle. None existed. To represent the disjointed nature of the command, no communication between the Russian players should be allowed. Some sort of individual initiative should also be used, where the left flank may be out of synch with the center, and so on.
