Disbanding of the Royal Cacciatori

1852

by Arturo Lorioli

In answer to a query on the E-groups Italian Wars list concerning the disbanding of the Royal Cacciatori, Arturo Lorioli of Rome, Italy replied:

…the "Reggimento Cacciatori Guardie" had been disbanded in 1852, when the Brigate Guardie was renamed Brigata Granatieri di Sardegna, after a rather confusing history. IIRC it was formed on 1816 by renaming the Reggimento di Sardegna (formed 1744), and remained independent until 1831, when it was merged in the Brigata Guardie as its 2nd Reggimento Cacciatori Guardie (the 1st Reggimento was of Granatieri). In 1839 the Rgts of the Brigade lost their numbers (maintaining their names), in 1848 the numbers were again assigned to the 1st and (newly formed) 2nd Reggimenti Granatieri while the Cacciatori did not have any number and were called just "Reggimento Cacciatori", returning to the name "Reggimento Cacciatori Guardie" in 1850.
