Observation from the Piedmont Gallery: According to Hibbert, Oudinot had only 9,000 troops to start with, probably those of the First Division. It was not until June when the 11,000 reinforcements arrived in Italy. It is my belief that the French Line and Light regiments went to Italy with only two of their three battalions. This is in keeping with the estimate of the first French landing having approximately 9,000 troops, and was also with their practice during the early part of the Crimean War.
