Battle of Mt. Olympus

A DBA Tourney for Greek Hoplite
Armies at Enfilade

by Paul A. Hannah

When Chris Brantley, back in Maryland and webmaster of the “Fanaticus - DBA Resource Page”, got word of ENFILADE’s move south to Olympia this year, he suggested a theme for a DBA tournament, the “Battle for Mt. Olympus”. Now why didn’t I think of that? A tourney for Greek Hoplite armies, held in the town named for the Greeks’ sacred Mt. Olympus.

Scheduled for the Friday evening time-slot, this DBA tourney will start with 8 players and 8 15mm DBA Greek Hoplite armies, played in a simple, single-elimination format. Terry Griner of Spokane and I will host the event and serve as friendly referees. Loaner-armies and terrain will be available, or players can use their own “legal” Early or Later Hoplite Greek armies (I/52a-i or II/5a-i).

The preliminary-round brackets will all sport the names of those funny-sounding towns and rivers on the Olympic Peninsula, such as the “Battle for Humptulips” and the “Battle of Lilliwaup”. Players eliminated in the early rounds will be warmly invited to play DBA pick-up games, or they can head off early to the vendor tables.

Xyston Miniatures and Fanaticus are sponsoring the final round, the “Battle for Mt. Olympus”. The winner will get an unpainted Xyston hoplite army. I am sponsoring the semi-final rounds. Winners will get gift-certificates to Fire & Sword Hobbies.

Richard Johnson once said that the purest of all wargames is a battle between two hoplite armies. Enter this DBA tourney and see if he was right. Or, at least, have fun trying to get to the “Battle of the Dosewallips” semi-final round.

Want to practice first? Come to a DBA Game Night, held every other Wednesday evening at Fire & Sword Hobbies in north Seattle. (E-mail me at PAHannah@aol.com for details.) Or, beat the traffic south on Friday 28 May, and get in on some DBA pick-up games in the new, informal, time-slot from 1-5 pm that afternoon. See you there!
