The Future of Breakthrough 2004

Convention Thoughts

by Norris Hazleton

I'm sure everyone knows that Breakthrough has been restored to Ed Teixeira. NHMGS and Trumpeter will no longer be the organizations responsible for Breakthrough. We thank Ed Teixeira for allowing us to administer his convention during his absence. While NHMGS may no longer be responsible for Breakthrough, I strongly urge all NHMGS members (and Trumpeter members) to continue supporting the convention by attending and hosting games.

I'd like to thank all those who have hosted games, provided vendor support, and performed the administrative work. The number of people who have provided help is long and basically encompasses almost all of us. During the last three years, Breakthrough has been a joint venture between NHMGS and Trumpeter (practically speaking, more Trumpeter than NHMGS).

The movement to Canada, and into a first rate venue at acceptable costs is the result of the incessant efforts of Steve Allen. The US DBM Open Championship at Breakthrough is entirely due to the untiring efforts of Bruce Meyer. Special thanks to these two individuals. I'd also like to extend a very grateful thanks to the gamers from Washington and Oregon who went to Canada in support of Breakthrough. Special thanks to the all of the GMs who bravely took their wares through customs and eloquently explained why all the metal was being transported across the border.

Paul Hannah moved vast air armadas between the US and Canada and provided wonderful games with spectacular terrain. I saw Bruce Meyer and Jim Denberger toiling endlessly and ceaselessly in an effort to bring the word of DBM to the unenlightened. Thanks to: Doug Hamm and Kevin Smyth for their 1812 games, Chris Leach for his humor and insight, Steve Allen for his always popular Formula Duh, and the various Canadian vendors, especially Imperial Hobbies where I picked up some nice rules I couldn't get in the US.

And here, I must apologize for my ignorance and lack of courtesy for not knowing or remembering the names of the many other fine US and Canadian GMs who provided great games for one and all. Thanks to the Sheraton for hosting us. I am simultaneously grateful for, and astonished by, those intrepid souls who ate the hotdogs. I had no trouble with the rolls, hamburgers and the fresh condiments, but I lacked the courage to tackle a hotdog. Here I can't speak for anyone else, but as for me, I'll always remember fondly my two Breakthroughs in Canada.
