Volunteers at Enfilade 2003

More Recognition

by Kevin Smyth

If you've ever been involved with a volunteer organization, like NHMGS or a convention like Enfilade, then you know how important volunteers are. All of those who run games, work the registration desk and plan for the convention do it because ... well somebody has to do it. In return we get knowing looks when things are going well, sometimes a thank you, and complaints when things are not so smooth. Without volunteers we'd be sunk. I always mention them in dispatches, but this year I hope to do more.

This year I'll take some time between the 3rd and 4th gaming period to honor our game hosts. These guys are special. They give up their own convention time to develop activities to share with others. It is a commitment of resources, the time to paint figures and create terrain, and develop a quality convention scenario. Every person who hosts a game will be honored with a certificate of appreciation. Those who host three or more games, a game in a least half of the periods, will receive a medal or medallion remembering their service. These are tokens, they do not truly reflect the depth of my appreciation for the work of game hosts, but they are what we CAN do.

We will once again offer a Best of Period award. I will, hopefully, convince some of you to be raters, wander the classroom and grade each game under specific criteria. It is not easy, but it is the fairest way to judge. The winner for each gamer period receives a medal, and becomes eligible for the Best of Show award. The BOS wins a paid weekend at Enfilade '04. That includes admission and a weekend in the hospitality suite. Good deal. Last year's winner was Chris Ewick for his Normandy beachhead game.

For the first time, I am making a Director's Award. This award is my recognition to those who have given outstanding service to Enfilade. The criteria are strictly arbitrary and the award is determined by me and me alone. There is so much that people do to put on the convention, and I appreciate it so much, it is, again, one small thing I can do.

Finally, each person who gives service to the convention, whether it is volunteering at the registration desk, working with dealers, or whatever else will be recognized during this brief ceremony.

Let me just close with these thoughts. Enfilade does not exist without the contributions of our volunteers. If you think you would like to help at the registration desk, rate games for the Best of Period competition, host games, or can help in some other capacity, don't hesitate to contact me.
