Trumpeter Salute 2002

Convention Report

By Steve Allen

Trumpeter Salute 2002 was an excellent event and a big success. With over 210 paid attendance and 50 plus visitors we had our most attended convention yet. With the help of some really great gamers and all round good guys and girls, Trumpeter Salute had 163 events booked for the weekend. This is the most events we have ever hosted at a convention, and I have to say the varied games surely held something for everyone. We had historicals, fantasy, RPG's, racing, flying, chariot races, tournaments and competitions. You name it, we had it.

It was a great thing to see how busy Friday night and Sunday were, we all know how those gaming slots seem to be tough to fill. But we had a good selection of games for people to play and lots of people to play them. So it was a win win. And SATURDAY? Man did we need more space! We were wall to wall all day and evening. I heard several comments throughout the day that the room was just buzzing with energy all day. As a result we are going to see about getting even more space for next year, maybe the whole second floor of Bonsor Community Center.

As always attendance was bolstered by many traveling to Vancouver to attend. We had gamers from Vancouver Island, Seattle, Gig Harbor, Portland and finally Calgary (my apologies to those I might have missed, thanks for making the trip). No convention is ever really successful until it can attract people from many different locations. The willingness of gamers to travel to Vancouver year after year is a testament to the success of the Trumpeter Salute. I hope it continues to grow and attract more and more out-of-towners. It’s always fun to meet new gamers and see new games and terrain.

Chris Oakley ran the Second Annual Trumpeter Salute Painting Contest. And again there are some damn good painters out there. I have nothing but good things to say about all the excellent entries in all the different categories. Congratulations to all the winners and a special thanks to all the painters for putting up your work for us to look at and envy.

Once again we were blessed with many awesome volunteers who ran the front desk, served us hot dogs and coke. And helped set up and tear down the convention. My thanks to each and everyone of you. The success at the door and the voracious appetites of the gamers once again restocked the club's coffers and guaranteed the continued good health of the Trumpeter Club. Thanks to all you gamers who munched hot dogs and snacks all weekend and supported the Club.

And finally the prizes. Man there were great PRIZES. The Trumpeter Club with the help of many great dealers and Excellent Gentleman such as Francis with Imperial Hobbies and Drew with Check Point Charlies were able to give away at least $2000.00 in excellent prizes. Thanks to everyone for their support of the Trumpeter Club and the Trumpeter Salute 2002. I hope you’re looking forward to Trumpeter Salute 2003 - I‘ll see you there.
